Carving out some time to attend to our wellbeing is underrated and often overlooked. Our busy and overscheduled lives can seem like a perpetual merry-go-round of tasks, events, and obligations. It’s time to hit the pause button for a weekend - or even for just the day.
Corvallis hits the spot for a weekend (or a day) of wellness, with many hidden gems that are easily accessible and won’t cost you a fortune.
Here are our favorites for you to pick and choose and build an itinerary that suits you and your wellness goals.
Newly opened and located on 2nd street, Misogi is open seven days a week to offer a therapeutic experience for your muscles. With a Swedish-style sauna, two cold plunge temperature options, and an infrared sauna, you’ll find some rest and recovery. I went three times in one week and could feel the benefits of relaxed muscles and increased energy.
Owner Deann Garcia explained, "Contrast therapy involves rapid vasodilation in heat, and vasoconstriction in cold, which, when paired together, improve circulation and stimulate the lymphatic system. It also activates the parasympathetic nervous system which regulates stress hormones and can lead to better sleep and overall feelings of wellness."
An added element of Misogi is the social aspect. The interior space has a cozy seating area that gives off a super chill community vibe.
If you think healthy food isn't tasty, this spot is going to change your mind, big time. Nestled in the heart of Corvallis, right on Madison Avenue, with big, bright windows and lots of indoor seating, Everbowl features superfood bowls, smoothies, and three open-faced toast options. The bowls are made with fresh ingredients such as fruit, acai, pitaya, and nut butters. You can choose from a selection of signature bowls or make your own. Perfect for breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up, these are great to incorporate into your wellness weekend.
Although they offer a variety of services, Honeycomb Salon is a go-to for massage treatments. They offer Swedish, deep tissue, and hot stone massages, in addition to cupping and other add-on services. They’re open seven days a week, which means you can choose which day you want to hold your wellness retreat.
There are so many benefits of tea. In addition to lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of stroke, and possibly preventing cancer, certain teas contain antioxidants and detoxification properties. Drop in Oregon Coffee & Tea, a third generation, family-owned business with an extensive assortment of teas and coffee.
Through Oregon State University’s Contemplative Studies Initiative, Marigold offers yoga and a variety of spiritual events. The historic Second Street building was once the site of Corvallis Soda Works, a local Pepsi Cola Bottling Company, and then later served as a fish hatchery. When the hatchery closed, it stood empty for over fifty years before becoming the refuge it is today. Lovingly restored, the space retains its high ceilings and large windows. Calming practices such as yoga and meditation can promote rest and relaxation, which can result in better sleep.
Located on the Marys Peak to Pacific Scenic Byway on the way to Alsea and the coast, the Thyme Garden is well worth the 30-minute drive. Established in 1989 as a seed company and nursery, this family-owned business hosts garden tours and luncheons in addition to year-round events. In the fall, they host a fun Salmon Celebration, which includes a tour and a six-course dinner. In the spring don’t miss their Earth Day Jubilee.
For some quiet contemplation, the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge offers over 5,325 acres of nature to explore and immerse yourself in. The natural area features plenty of hiking trails, ranging from easy to moderate, and is home to colorful wildflowers during spring and summer. The gift shop, Wild Goose Nature Store, is a fun stop; you’ll find mugs, stationery, and other nature-centric gifts.
