The Most Delightfully Weird Weekend in Oregon Happens in Corvallis

The third weekend in July is a great time to gear up for one of Corvallis’ most iconic, colorful, and joyfully unexpected summer weekend traditions, the Graand Kinetic Challenge.

July 18–19, 2026 Corvallis transforms into a moving celebration of art, science, and imagination. At the center of it all is a kinetic sculpture race featuring human-powered, pedal-pushed, all-terrain works of kinetic art that roll over roads, climb a sand dune, slog through a mud bog, and float (or attempt float) down the Willamette River.

It is a full weekend experience, and if you do it right, it is absolutely worth staying for.

This year’s theme, Kaleidoscope Colors, invites racers and spectators alike to lean into bold creativity, shifting perspectives, and imaginative interpretations of color. And in true Corvallis fashion, the race is just the beginning.

Book direct by June 17th with the discount code "Graand Kinetic Challenge" at the Holiday Inn Express Corvallis-On The River. For more details, visit the Graand Kinetic Challenge website.

Make it a weekend. Arrive Friday and book a hotel for the entire weekend of festivities.

Stay close to the action at the Holiday Inn Express Corvallis-On the River, where you can receive a discount by booking directly with the event’s hotel partner using the code “Graand Kinetic Challenge”, then head downtown to ease into the vibe.

The annual Midsummer Market sidewalk sales in downtown Corvallis are already in full swing. Shops in the historic downtown spill onto the sidewalks, music drifts between buildings, and the whole downtown hums with early summer energy, thanks in part to nearby Oregon State University.

You might spot kinetic teams grabbing pizza and carbo-loading before the big day. Grab dinner at a downtown restaurant, wander a little, and turn in early.

Tomorrow, things get delightfully weird.

Morning: Come for the Costumes, Stay for the Songs

Start your day around 10:00 a.m. at the outdoor theater at the Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts, also known as PRAx, for the Pageantry competition.

Teams introduce themselves with costumes, characters, and original songs. Each performance must include the words “kinetic,” “Corvallis,” and “da Vinci.” It is part performance, part engineering reveal, and entirely entertaining.

Midday: The Race Is On and So Is Everything Else

Around 12:15 p.m., the race begins just steps away.

With a “Le Mans” style start, teams sprint to their machines and pedal out onto the course, heading down Campus Way toward the Sand Dune challenge at the Benton County Fairgrounds.

Corvallis is famously bikeable, and following the race by bike is half the fun. You can move between PRAx and the sand dune, catching different moments along the way.

No bike? No problem. On Saturday VEO bike share offers easy rentals nearby (special discount codes will be posted nearby), and Oregon State University runs shuttles to help spectators move between locations. On Sunday there is a bike path between Crystal Lake Park (where the Mud Bog and Water Entry happens) and Downtown.

Meanwhile, back at PRAx, the Corvallis Kaleidoscope festival runs from noon to 6:00 p.m.  You’ll find a vibrant mix of hands-on S.T.E.A.M. exhibits, live demonstrations, music, and food trucks. It is easy to move between watching the race and jumping into interactive experiences.

At the sand dune, expect cheers, music, and a lot of determination as teams attempt one of the course’s most notorious obstacles before looping around Bald Hill Natural Area and back toward PRAx.

Evening: Ballgame and a Big Finish in the Sky

By evening, head to a Corvallis Knights game, just a short walk from the festival.

It is classic summer. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and first pitch is at 7:00 pm. Stay through the final inning, because the night ends with a drone show lighting up the sky. It is colorful, coordinated, and just the right amount of wow.

Morning: Things Get Messy

Head to south Corvallis for the 10:00 a.m. Mud Bog at Crystal Lake Sports Park.

Each team has 15 minutes to cross a 200-foot stretch of thick mud. Some glide through. Some very much do not. Either way, it is a crowd favorite.

Afterward, kids and adventurous adults are invited to jump in. Bring a towel. You will want it.

Midday: Will It Float?

Around 12:30 p.m., the action shifts to the river.

At the boat launch, the question everyone has been waiting for finally gets answered.

Will it float?
Will it sink?
How big will the splash be?

Teams travel two river miles down the Willamette, paddling their sculptural creations through one of the most scenic stretches of the course. Find a viewing spot along Van Buren Bridge for a wide-angle perspective or head to Michael’s Landing to see the teams exit the river.

Afternoon: For the Glory

By early afternoon, racers cross the finish line at Riverfront Commemorative Park.

The sculptures line up on the grass, teams relax or collapse, and spectators are invited to wander through, ask questions, and get an up-close look at the creativity and engineering behind each machine.

Before you go, grab a scoop from Sugar J's Ice Cream or linger downtown for more shopping or for a late lunch.

At its core, the Graand Kinetic Challenge is not about speed.

It is about creativity, community, and the simple joy of doing something a little ridiculous together.

Racers are artists, engineers, performers, and enthusiastic problem-solvers. Awards range from serious, like engineering, artistry, and time, to wonderfully not so serious, like Best Cuddly Teddy Bear.

Costumes are encouraged. Cheering is expected. The guiding philosophy: For the Fun of It! says it all.

Come curious. Come playful. Come ready to stay awhile. You will want the full weekend for this one.
