It’s no surprise that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can come with added stress, wreaking havoc on our energy levels, sleep, and overall well-being. To-do lists, shopping lists, and work commitments can be overwhelming and cause us to forget about the beauty of this time of the year, with cheerfully decorated storefronts and fun traditions. Whether you’re just visiting Corvallis or a local like myself, these are ten suggestions for ways to slow down during the busy season.
Set along second street, Epic offers massages in a variety of modalities, facials, and salon services. Specialty massages include prenatal, lymphatic drainage, and hot stone. My favorite is the hot stone massage, which helps to relieve tension with the use of heated river stones. For an additional $40 spa guests can also get full access to the spa's luxurious rainfall showers, steam room, and relaxation room. Tip: You’ll need an appointment here, but I love booking well in advance so that I have something indulgent to look forward to.
Escape the busyness of the season by taking a detour at this forested sanctuary. Located on Arboretum Road in northwest Corvallis, the 40-acre arboretum is operated by Oregon State University and is free to the public. Surrounded by a canopy of old-growth trees, you’ll find many hiking options. Lithic scatters from the Kalapuya tribe, who once lived in this area, have been found in the park. Take a walk, listen to the birds, and get grounded before returning to your commitments.
If you're visiting Corvallis for the holidays between November 26 - January 1, you can save 20% on your stay at the Comfort Suites by calling 541-753-4320 and mentioning the "Home for the Holidays" deal. It's a great way to relax and recharge after exploring the beauty of the arboretum.
This lively food truck pod is the perfect gathering place, regardless of the season. It’s a great place to meet friends for lunch or to slow down and enjoy a cup of coffee or local draft. You’ll find comfortable dining booths with heaters overhead for warmth and live entertainment on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the taproom. There are four food trucks, featuring global cuisine in a casual and fun atmosphere. Don’t miss Nouveau Poke Co., which blends Japanese and Korean cultures to create delicious and fresh poke bowls. On any given day, you can find locals and visitors enjoying food and conversation. Because the space is dog friendly, you’ll also notice pups happy to be close to their owners.
Did you know that the #6 Wine Bar in the Nation, according to Newsweek, is right here in our town? Take a break from wrapping presents and other adulting obligations to enjoy a relaxing night out. This cozy space serves Mezcal, tequila flights, agave cocktails, and, of course, wine. Food includes small tapas plates, alongside inventive dishes such as wild boar, pheasant, and rabbit proteins. One of my favorites on their menu is the tinned fish served alongside delicious local bread. The full dinner menu is only available Tuesday - Saturday 5-9:30 p.m. Tinned fish and apps are served at all times when they’re open.
About three miles from Oregon State University’s campus is a 13-acre Christmas tree farm that has been serving the community for over 45 years. Visitors come for pre-cut and U-cut trees, wreaths, and garlands, but the farm is also home to a ceramic pottery studio and gift shop, along with two guest houses.
Owners Dale and Peggy Donovan welcome guests to visit, meander, and book a stay at their property. The Contemporary Flat is a spacious and welcoming space, on the first floor of the couple’s home. Furnished with mid-century modern design, you’ll find a full kitchen with a microwave, Keurig coffee maker, and much more.
The 1880s farmhouse offers more space, accommodating up to ten guests. Discover all the comforts of a home away from home, in addition to lots of privacy, games for the kiddos, and a peaceful surrounding. Both rentals are available throughout the year and set the stage for a great family reunion.
There’s nothing like music to soothe the soul. Settle in for a relaxing performance put on by talented musicians in our own community. Check their website for times and venues. Concerts are typically 90 minutes with a pre-concert talk with Artistic Director, Lance Inouye.

It’s a fun place to hit solo, or with friends and family.
If you’ve never been to Garland, you don’t know what you’re missing! This Corvallis staple has a plethora of plants, flowers, garden supplies, and gift items. During the season, they host workshops on wreath and bow making, holiday centerpiece making, and much more. Whether you’re holiday shopping or just browsing, make it a point to meander the property and wander through the aisles. Envelop yourself in the magic of slowing down and enjoying the wonderment of the season.
Receiving acupuncture at Corvallis Community Acupuncture is a great way to slow down and de-stress. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce cortisol, which leads to weight gain and inflammation. The communal set-up is in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. There are comfortable chairs that recline so you can lay back and focus on your breathing. You can also bring headphones and listen to music. Booking an appointment is easy and can be done online. The initial visit is $55 and following visits are $45.
