Fall Color in Corvallis

Shakespeare in Love

Oregon State University Theatre will present “Shakespeare in Love,” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and 15 and Nov. 22 and 23, and 2 p.m. Nov. 17 and Nov. 24 in the Withycombe Hall Main Stage theatre, 2901 SW Campus Way, Corvallis.

The theme for 2019-2020 theater season is “The Undeniable Truth.” “Shakespeare in Love” is based on the screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard and adapted for the stage by Lee Hall.

In the play, set in 1592, a young William Shakespeare is a struggling playwright suffering from a severe case of writer’s block until he meets the charming Viola DeLesseps, the daughter of a wealthy merchant with dreams of becoming an actor. The play features music, dance, comedy and love and explores themes of creativity and art.

“This is really a celebration of the theater and the love, sweat and tears that go into bringing a play to life,” said Elizabeth Helman, the play’s director and a member of the OSU Theatre faculty. “It’s heartening to remember that at one time even Shakespeare was just some unknown writer from a small town struggling to make a career for himself.”

The cast features OSU students Maia Barnebey as Kate; James Coronel as Adam; Rue Dickey as Ralph; Austin Dufrene as Peter; Alessandra Ferriso as Viola; Noah Fox as Burbage; Srimanyu Ganapathineedi as Robin; Josh Gasaway as DeLesseps; AJ Glessner as Sam; Genesis Hansen as Webster; Emily Jackson as the Queen; Brook Mackaness as Marlowe; Thomas R. McKean as Will; Kian Mitchell as Nol; Nick Olson as Wabash; Robert Reeder as Ned; Hannah Schwartz as Nurse; Josh Smith as Wessex; and Kiwi Sturgeon as Molly. The cast also includes community members Shawn Bookey as Tilney; Matt Holland as Henslowe; and Rick Wallace as Fennyman.

Tickets are $15 for general admission; $12 for seniors; $10 for youth/students; and $5 for OSU students. They are available through the OSU Theatre Box Office at 541-737-2784 or online.
