Learning Together

Learning Together, collaborative artwork by Alisha Whitman and daughters Jenelle and Meredith

Alisha Whitman is an accomplished watercolor artist who homeschools her 4 children. She and her children always participate in the Howland Community OPEN Exhibition. It is no surprise they came up with an interesting collaboration with each other for an exhibit in the Arts Center’s Corrine Woodman Gallery. The work of mother and children, each taking different roles in each image, combines remarkably well.

Alisha explains in her own words: "Art plays a big part in our family, as does learning together. My kids and I decided this year that it would be fun to collaborate on an art project together as we learned about endangered animals. We decided to focus on endangered, threatened, and species of concern in Oregon, as that made the problem much more real to my kids since it is our home. Most of our images were printed using a method called monoprint, which means it's a one-time print. We chose this because it looked like an exciting new method to learn, and because the one-time nature of it seemed to fit our focus, since we have one shot at protecting these species. When they're gone, they're gone. We are all participating in all parts of the process, with each print being created by two or three of us (one person draws it, one prints it, one paints it). This also seemed fitting since we can all do something, however small it may be, to protect our planet and these endangered species here at home."
